Please meet Marie Matthews. Marie was born in the North End of Boston in 1930. She was the oldest of six children and began working in a factory when she was just 13 years old. The North End is known for its Italian American population and delicious Italian restaurants.

Marie met her first husband, Richard Matthews, while working in Miami for Liberty Mutual Insurance. Richard had two children from a previous marriage, Ellen and George, and together they had two girls, Anna and Lisa. Richard passed away from cancer in 1983. Marie married Bernie Welch in 1989.

Marie is a loving grandmother of four grandchildren; Lisa has two boys, Luke and Matthew, and Anna has two girls, Lillian and Bella. She is an accomplished artist, creating designs in stained glass. Some of her artwork hangs in her church of many years, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mount Dora, Florida. She also created jewelry by blowing glass into beads called lampwork beads. This is a process where a torch is used to melt the glass and then form it into beads. Marie is wearing a necklace she made in the photo. 

It was our privilege to serve Marie and her family. To show our appreciation for their trust in us, we have made a donation in Marie’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
