May is National Elder Law Month!

May 7, 2021 in News

May is National Elder Law Month, established by the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), a professional association of attorneys dedicated to improving the quality of legal services provided to American seniors and individuals with special needs. It allows us the opportunity to educate our local community of seniors about their legal options, urging the importance of planning early to ensure their final wishes are legally bound.

The senior population, which is considered to be those aged 65 and older, has increased from 35 million in year 2000 to 41.4 million in 2011. That is an 18% increase in 11 years. It is projected to continue increasing over the next 20 years to 79.7 million persons age 65 or older, comprising more than 20% of the population. It is imperative for this age group to prepare for potential long-term care. The cost for this care can often be exorbitant and cause an intense impact on family. In 2005 a total of $207 billion dollars was spent on long-term care alone.

Adept Elder Law attorneys, such as The Elder Law Center of Kirson & Fuller, strive to assist clients by way of counseling individuals and their families on how to best prepare for sufficient long-term care. During the month of May and beyond, we offer to educate the community with legal options in handling long-term care planning, special-needs planning, Medicaid eligibility, VA benefits, preparation of wills, trusts and more.
