National Senior Citizen Day! – August 21st
Tomorrow, Saturday, August 21st is National Senior Citizen Day! Originally proclaimed in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to bring public attention to the daily social, economic, and health issues affecting our nations senior citizens. This is extremely important, especially since according to the US Census Bureau, over 47 million seniors live in the United States toady, and that figure is estimated to double by 2060.
“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older — places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity.” – Ronald Reagan, 1988
The wisdom, experience and shear skill of the seniors in our communities are vital to the following generations advancements. Senior citizens are pioneers of technology, science, psychology, medicine, civil rights and so, so much more. Our seniors are the reason we are able to continue cultivating and forging ahead.
This weekend, take a moment and spend some time with your fearless elders. If you are a senior citizenship yourself – we’d like to sincerely thank you for all you have done! There may even be discounts and promotions offered at your neighborhood shops and restaurants.
Happy National Senior Citizen Day!
